Generic law question: My roommate's parent's town has an ordinance about no residential street parking after 2am.

Roommate and gf were out at his parents' for Thanksgiving weekend. At 4am on Saturday morning, on Thanksgiving weekend, they got parking tickets.

Ignoring that it's a dick move on Thanksgiving weekend, the question is as follows:

There are no signs on the streets saying no parking after 2am. You are just expected to know apparently. I don't believe ignorance of the law is a defense, but if the city doesn't post signs is there any defense at all?
