My Mom had it several times before she eventually went blind from macular degeneration--they use the laser to lay down a grid on the retina so there's

no fluid leakage or pressure build up. Unfortunately she waited too long before starting treatment. My eye doctor actually takes pictures of the backs of my eyes every year to check for distended blood vessels, etc, so he can catch any diabetic complications early.
