My take would be that becuase speech can't be shut out; everyone feels entitled to their time...even the batshit insane portion

to counter the potential of being labeled unamerican by telling the crazy ones to stfu and go sit down in shame, we feel an obligation to let them speak so as to not infringe on their 'right to speak'.
This leads to people spouting crazy shit that should be laughed at, but we don't and instead of actually moving forward, we keep getting pulled down to the lowest level of discourse by those 'entitled' to speak.
