There could have been 2 of them and 11-5 teams still would have been at home while 8-8 teams have home playoff games

at the absolute minimum they should reseed the teams that make the playoffs by their records so 8-8 plays on the road.
getting rid of the 4th division makes the most sense but they'd never do that. I think they could sell going to 8 teams on each side, more games = more money, scrap the bye and it doesn't extend the year any. With that setup it'd be very unlikely a good record gets left out.
