My two cents on the dog thing...You don't bring the dog unless the dog is invited.

My dog gets invited to a lot of functions, but he gets excluded sometimes. If it's a dinner party, especially if there are going to be people there I don't know, I don't want to force my dog on other people.
If there are going to be dogs and I don't know the other dogs, then my dog stays home. One well behaved dog may be OK, but the more dogs are in the house the more chaotic things will be. You do not know how your dog will act around a strange dog and vice versa.
