Send good thoughts please.

About 4 weeks ago my father-in-law's leg and back started to hurt. He assumed it was his sciatic nerve acting up again. Within 3 weeks the pain progressed to the point that he could barely walk and his doctor ordered a MRI. The MRI showed that he had cancer; we learned this last Friday, 8 days ago. On Monday, his doctor admitted him to the hospital for tests to determine the type and extent of the cancer. Today his doctors broke the news to him and the family -- they expect that he has 3-6 weeks left to live.

They believe this started in his pancreas. The oncologist said he had never seen a cancer this aggressive. At this point he has cancer in his bones, liver, kidneys, and thyroid in addition to his pancreas. If he lives long enough, he will turn 78 on Jan. 12.

He is in tremendous pain. Once we learned of the extent of the cancer and it was clear that he would not recover from this, I think we were all concerned about how much pain he will have to endure until the end finally comes. We are all devastated by how quickly he went from being a fairly healthy, energetic guy to being imminently terminal. But I'm glad to know that he won't need to suffer for months on end.
