I think the need for repeat viewings is one reason why the best movie doesn't always win Best Picture

Great movies are complex, and need to be seen several times in order to get them. But most Academy members will see a film only once before voting, so films with a simple, digestible message and heartwarming emotions (like The Kings Speech) tend to win votes over films that aren't fully understood by the voters yet.
The other big reason is, of course, politics.
