Just do the Assassin's Guild questline and you get Shadowmere for free. He kicks ass and will fight right along with you.He can kill bandits and bears

on his own, but needs help for other stuff. Be careful though, unlike in Oblivion, he can be killed but he takes quite a licking. Also, you can heal him (or all the other horses you keep killing) during a battle wither one of the "heal another person" spells.
