Like Kilbo said the app killers don't really work and can slow your phone down. The apps that are running in the background

shouldn't be an issue. They're not really doing anything and shouldn't really be using any resources. I worried about this myself when I first got a smartphone but after researching it I found out they're not something we need to worry about it.
If you root your phone you can get rid of any program that came pre-installed and there are root only apps that will give you more control over what is running and what isn't. For example, there's an app called Titanium Backup that I use that allows me to freeze any app instead of deleting it.
