He was probably one of several suspects they had. They knew he was at a high level in Russian intelligence and there aren't too many of those. So they put dossiers on each of the likely suspects in the file - and that's also why Renner can tell who it is right away.
The question I had is why would Russia hire a Swede to think up their nuclear missile strategies?
