Somebody explain the end of Dogtooth to me (spoilers)

It just ended. Did the girl die in the trunk? Did she not realize she couldn't open it from the inside? Was she too scared to get out and face the world?
Also, if she borrowed only 2 videocassettes from the girl security guard/whore, why did she reference three movies (jaws in the pool, rocky, and then do the dance from flashdance).
Considering the box has the quote "hilarious" on the cover, we didn't laugh once. I found it disturbing, but it didn't really go anywhere or have a plot. Whenever the kids got conflicting definitions, like zombie, why didn't they call their parents on it?
Maybe we missed it, but the motivation of the parents was never revealed. Based on the dogtooth explanation, the children would never be able to leave home. If that was the reason, why do it? What happens to the kids if the parents die? (Like at the end when the youngest wakes her father up, he was so still for so long that I thought he had died and they would be forced to go out on their own. This could have had a lot more potential if they had gone somewhere/anywhere with the premise.
