I have a contrasting view with regards to running and the need for gyms

I think if one is doing a gradual training program with the goal of finishing the goal distance, a one dimensional training program can work.
It will be far better for one to do overall workouts but my experience if one is attempting something like a couch to 10K type thing, one of level discipline to just run can be plenty and better to be completely consistent with that as opposed to trying a bit of everything and not being consistent with anything.
Course it took me something like 26 months and 950 miles to kill off the battery in one of the Nike+ sensors so it's not like I'm the most consistent runner either but I did that pretty much with just running.
Just for this most current training kick (intermediate half marathon coming up Super Bowl Sunday and final goal half marathon May 2nd) have I added anything else and that has been starting the 100 pushups program back in November (up to about 45 best max and working on doing a second week 6 right now) as well as some core work that is supposed to be specific to runners as far as any type of anything other than just going out and running the miles.
If it just to get through the first 10K, I think that one can just run.
