Here's one of those problems that's just annoying enough to be a problem but not problematic enough to be worth fixing... so then what?

Four weeks ago I replaced the bedroom and living room heating/cooling units in my condo. The originals had been there at least 20 years if not 40; they were rusting, other condo units had experienced leaks causing $$$ damage to neighbors, and I was getting a lot of dust that I figured was from old/dirty insulation. So I bought these new ones to get a fresh start, reliable mechanics, good presentation for the future owners...

They smell. Not enough to drive me out of the apartment, but my old old ones didn't smell, and on the first day of the new ones I noticed a strong smell. Kind of like the heating filament smell in floor heating fans, but different. Oily. Like a coating in the motor is being burnt off. I thought maybe after a week of use this would dissipate, or maybe these were industrial units not intended for small residential spaces, but reps from the company just came in and confirmed that nothing's wrong or out of the ordinary. They're the same model installed in 50 other apartments in my condo over the last year, with no complaints, so I'm not dealing with a recall situation, and at a cost of $2000 I'm not going to say "let's install a different model".

But it's a strong enough smell that there have been some nights that I've dreaded having to sleep in my bedroom. All the more reason to push and sell my condo and go elsewhere, but that too seems like running from a problem rather than fixing it. Annoying.
