1) assume there's some kind of coating that needs to "burn off." turn the heat way way up one day when you're at work (or even home) to try to get it to cook off.
(alt: do this when you're at home -- listen to calypso music and drink cuba libres while wearing shorts and a lei)
2) find out if it stenches when it cools -- turn on the air conditioning. I know. it's winter. science, man!
3) ask another unit who's been replaced to come smell your heat, and ask to smell theirs. if there's a difference, make the dude come back and sniff both units and ask him to explain.
4) when all of this fails, move to wytana. monyoming. whichever. the border is fine.
