I'm googling, but a couple questions regarding an external hard drive that's Mac formatted that I want to use to back up a PC.

So I have two external hard drives. A 1.0TB WD My Book Essential and a 2.0Tb Seagate Expansion. They both have files on them, but they were used with a Mac previously. I want to use them with a PC.

When I attach either drive to my PC (one with Windows 7 and another with Windows XP), it will not show up under My Computer. If I check under Disk Management I can see the disk and it gives it a Disk Number but does not give it a Disk Letter. All options under Disk Management such as Change Drive Letter, etc. are grayed out. I also can not access the hard drive to reformat it.

The good news is that I'm not all that concerned with the files that are currently on the hard drive. If possible I would like to be able to look at them and see if there's anything I want from the disk, but if that's not something I can do pretty easily without the use of a Mac, I'm fine with that. Is there an easy way to access those files with a PC?

If not, I just want to format the drives to use with a PC. I've found some documentation about how to do that with the WD drive (something about writing zeros), but not with the Seagate drive. I wasn't sure if that was something that was specific to the WD Drive.
