hacking something cheap to do what i want.

roku - seems awesome, no local playback (but i have tons of ripped movies on my server, whine).

apple tv - no local, only itunes.

wd live - too many complaints about stuff on the interwebs.

boxxee - plays local, and netflix, but $200

htpc - would play everything, cost $400 to $500

apple tv - hacked for xbmc, would still have all original apple, netflix, and would play local and ice-films might stream shows instead of torrenting.

so, maybe hacking is the right option.
