Thing is, Oscar has next to no history of nominating animation, with or without the animation category.

1 movie out of 80 ceremonies getting nominated shows a pretty clear pattern of them not rewarding animation in general.
you'd have to show that Monsters/Shrek/Nemo/Incredibles would have been nominated in the first place to begin to show the extra category diluted the original.
I don't think you can with the evidence presented. 1 every 65 years or so isn't a pattern that shows stopping in the last 7-8 years. It's not a pattern at all, other than Oscar doesn't care about animation.
