I think that it's nice that they've varied each of them a little. Peter either just has to be near the person, or near them when they are using their power. Sylar has to actually take the power from them/their brain. Their dad seems to take them from people while also draining their life, but that might not be the case. He also seems to steal them as opposed to copying them(like Peter does).
