He willfully went into Vietnam with force...but more to the point, he mistook the Senate leadership he'd shown as though they'd fall right in line for

him; which wasn't the case. He wasn't LBJ, senate leader anymore, he was LBJ, leader of the free world and he wasn't ready for that change.
Vietname didn't really kick off heavily till after JFK died; if LBJ wanted to, he could have changed that history; he was the President. He either made a blunder in making his own choice...or he made the mistake of continuing a policy JFK was going to follow down the rabbit hole.
but for a guy who exercised power so deftly in the Senate, he made some spectacular mistakes.
