is because they already did a MMO set in the Star Wars we know and love (well some) time frame.

Star Wars Galaxies. That ended, this is something new.

PLUS, the overall concept of SW:TOR would not work for one second if it took place in the current Star Wars universe.

The Jedi's are literally almost all wiped out and their is only two Sith.

kinda limits your options if you want to play either of those classes.

so they chose a time line in the Star Wars universe where their were literally thousands of Jedi's and thousands of Sith.
