The #1 overall pick earned $22 million over 4 years, which pro-rates to $5.5 million a season. Manning's cap number for 2012 is $22 million.

Whoever said that number is 100% wrong and you shouldn't trust them for cap information anymore. I don't care if it's Adam Schefter.

The way the person is wrong is that they are presuming that Peyton is cut after March 8 but not paid for the season. Were that to happen, a hailstorm of cap charges would hit at once. Cutting Peyton Manning today would mean $16 million in dead money. After March 8, the number jumps to $44 million, which is how/why the person you are quoting is wrong. They are adding $6 million to $50 million. In reality, those charges do not hit *unless* he gets cut. If Peyton is on the roster on March 8, he will be with the team this year.
