I was told I basically had it right, but had not locked the seat belt, so that meant no go.

My car is old and doesnt have the latch system, which seems to be a lot easier to deal with.

The firefighter brought me over to his car and showed me the latch and tether systems so I would know what to look for when we go car shopping. That was helpful.

- Nah. In fact, for rear facing seats, I believe that seatbelt install is preferred over latch. All car seats are compatible with both. -- nm - Mop (196 lbs) Jan 25, 09:35
Latch is actually really annoying in our mazda3, and doesn't allow you to center-mount the carseat -- nm - Beryllium Jan 25, 08:41
