As far as I knew you were only voiding your warranty not doing anything illegal. Not sure how they can tell me I can't wipe out the OS and do whatever

I want with the device. If I want to put DOS on there they shouldn't be able to tell me I can't. I own the device and I shouldn't be forced to use their OS any longer than I choose to.
They can void my warranty and all that but there shouldn't be any problem with installing a new OS. I don't see it any differently than if I bought a Dell that came with Windows but I wiped it out and put a Linux OS on instead.
