Well. I *know* it can work if both people want to put in the effort. I don't think distance is the real issue, it sounds more like fear of commitmemt.

If person B really does love person A (the writer) he/she would be starting to plan how they can get together on a permanant basis. One of them is going to have to move, but only after a promise of commitment. Or, they could pick a whole different area all together and move there. Either way, it will involve some goal setting and a clear timeline. If either A or B isn't willing to do these things, then (imo) it's just a case of loving being in love without the work.
