Yeah, taking evidence from a crime scene is bad. It's done too much on police (and related) shows.
You wear gloves when handling shell casings to keep prints intact, and keep your prints off them, so that they'll be good evidence for the trial. None of these people are going on trial, so I don't see tat it wasn't done as a huge deal. That said, it should be second nature for an experienced detective. Or, barring gloves, picking it up using one of the many surrounding sticks as has been done on many other shows. So, while it doesn't have negative repercussions, it does seem to be a mistake in either writing, acting, or directing.
Most law enforcement do their best to avoid using their weapon. So at least one part of her training stuck.
A cop with limited resources would start at 175 yards. Then work their way down. They hadn't had time to make it down to 150 yards yet.
Dialogue similar to Hurley is hardly surprising. One of the three creators, who also co-wrote the pilot, was a writer on Lost. The third episode was also written by someone who wrote for Lost.
