Elsewhere, some correspondent made a pretty good case for something called the ten thousand hour rule for artists.

I had never heard of it, but the idea is that artists should be seasoned performers before they try to get on the national stage. He mentioned the Beatles on Ed Sullivan as a classic example.
I think I'm going to remember that with new artists, if only to see whether it's true.
