I think there's some truth to this - but I also know quite a few intelligent people who know a lot in their field, but not really a lot about

Politics or economics or philosophy or ethics, so they plump for those simplified ideologies because it makes sense to them based on what little they know.
So, it's not that all these people are dumbasses. They're just dumbasses about these particular things
