My two trips to NYC have stayed at the Hudson

Small but nice rooms. Easy access to subway station as well as some good restaurants in the immediate area.
Was also pretty decent pricing which influenced our selection of the hotel (as well as familiarity with the area) to go the second time.
Midtown location also allows walking to some degree of the sights
