NYC -- Manhattan -- is only two miles wide at the widest -- and 12 miles long --

**anywhere** on the island is within walking distance, if you're a walker.
Twenty blocks to the mile N-S.
If you're not a walker -- Most NY-ers are -- then even a few blocks will put you off.
Also, subway transit is fast, efficient and often amusing. Then, there are always cabs.
I echo Znu's advise about the # of subway stops.
