I call some of her female cats "dolly" in a general way (she and her husband have a lot of cats). she recently told my sister that she was thinking of renaming one of her kitties to that - the cat is a couple of years old now.
she renamed others along the way when they were littler, and some ended-up with multiple names.
I have no idea how my siblings and I kept our names. (one did go by a nickname most of his life; but, except for normal shortenings, that's it.)
I did hear growing up that Mom wanted me to be named something other than my name - I may have shared it here before, but not going to now or mick.'ll never let it go - and my older siblings impressed upon her how bad it would be. phew.
