He has nothing in common with his family, which is his fault but realizes that people he previously belittled are people who are his family because they have the same values. Values unite people not superficial things like skin color, cultures or even bloodlines.
I'll grant you that the story is can be seen as trite but done by Eastwood it's a success.
You're going to hate my He Said/She Said which is coming tonight. It's nearly as good as "Unforgiven".
