In response to "FWIW, I largely stopped self-mixing funds in my 401(k) and just go with a blended fund." by spamlet

I went with the target date fund maybe a year or 18 months ago because I need to step away and let it self-manage for a while.

The unsure economy and 401K losses had me stressed and looking at my investment mix far more often than I needed to or probably should. I needed to put my 401K on autopilot and take myself out of the equation for a while, for my own sanity.

Now I'm due for the periodic review of how things are doing, and I'm somewhat surprised at how mediocre these funds are doing. They aren't losing, which I guess is something, but I didn't beat inflation over the past 12 months either. (The nearer-term target date fund did beat inflation -- due to their higher reliance on bonds I presume).

So it might just be time to start self-mixing again, because I've got to, at a minimum, beat inflation.

(My 401K is also through Fidelity and I have about a gazillion options)
