There were always going to be teams playing weak at the end; I'd far more have it being the 3rd seed instead of the conceivable 1/4 seeds

if the Yanks/Sox close the season and both are in, why would they care? Now, they will, in theory.
If the Tigers are sitting there locked in as the 3 seed...sure, they can rest...the goal remains the same, win the division or risk losing the 1-gamer.
Getting an extra game, can in no way be unfair to anyone except those who felt entitled to not winning their division and still getting 3 games.
