Trust me, I'm the first person to bash our current healthcare system, but your statement is by no means true, across the board (with one exception)

We DO pay top dollar.
That said, 99% of the nurses and ancillary hospital and clinic/office staff are very good at what they do--and they do it for lower pay than they'd make elsewhere in the world. With doctors, it's probably more like 95% who are mediocre. Usually they end up working themselves into administrative systems jobs at various insurance companies.
