Ben Linus was a character in LOST who was the leader of "The Others", people who were already on the island when the plane crashed. He had quite the back story, which is way too long to write up here. Anyway, he portrayed himself first as a member of the survivors in the tail section of the plane. Then he changed his story and pretended like he got there on a hot air balloon. Also a lie. The survivors finally realized he was the puppet master pulling all the strings and privy to all the island's secrets. He was a very ambiguous character.
