They want him to start eating soft foods (scrambled eggs, applesauce, etc) to get his tongue and mouth muscles working and stronger again. It hurts, so he won't try, despite the docs telling him that yeah, it will hurt at first, but will get better. He continues to use the feeding tube for everything.
The cancer sucks, and it is going to eventually win, but it's going to win quicker than it should because he is doing nothing to help himself. There is now no physical reason why he should be on a couch for almost all of the day. As it is, he does stuff when he feels like it (driving to see friends, etc) but then spends the rest of the time asking us to do stuff like turn off a light next to him, get him a glass of water, etc. all stuff he had the ability to do.
Now I get why my mother spends so little time here.
