I don't think her purpose in talking to Shane was to calm him down. I think she was just feeling guilty. I think what she did was give Shane something, a bit of something, some kindness, some reciprocity that mellowed him for a few minutes with Rick.

The thing that puzzled me was Carl pointing the gun at Rick. I can't figure out the motivation for that given that the scene before between them had Rick treating Carl like an adult and admitting that he needed his help. What was the point of Carl pointing the gun at Rick then? What possible reason?
