It weakens him because Romney will continue to be defined by his opponents, rather than by his own campaign.

I agree that many conservatives will come out and vote for him anyway, but independents will vote on who they think is most likely to have the solutions to America's problems and Romney's not making that case.
Personally, I think that Romney has several positives (that also come with their negatives) when it comes to solving these problems. His experience at Bain Capital, his experience turning around the management of the Salt Lake Olympics, and his experience as governor of a liberal state. But voters aren't believing that he truly understands these problems, and that means they won't trust him to solve them.
