More like he's struggling to tell his story, and he's doing it in a way that confirms the negative views that voters have of him.

I think that Romney is at heart a moderate Republican, a pragmatist and a high-level thinker. But his opponents have defined moderate as not one of us, pragmatist as flip-flopper and high-level thinker as out of touch with ordinary concerns.

And when he tries to change these perceptions, he does so in a terrible way. "My wife owns several Cadillacs" "Some of my best friends are NASCAR team owners" etc.

For examples of Romney moving to the right - I think it's more that he is highlighting and rephrasing things that he has said or done in the past that support the perception that he is a conservative. So it's more rhetoric than policy. But going after Rick Perry's stance on immigration is one example. Saying "I don't know whether climate change is human caused" is another. And all the negative ads against Gingrich and Santorum for holding liberal views do their part as well.
