In any large American urban centre today, do you think 2 innocent children or teenagers are murdered each year? I am going to say almost always more. Are parents out there enrolling their kids in classes to learn to fight for their life? No, they aren't. The odds of it being YOU are small. And, like in the book, the odds change with your economic status. If you are poverty stricken in real life, you might be forced to live in a bad neighborhood with drug violence and more random shootings, in the book you may be forced to increase your odds by taking the food and putting your name in more.
