I think his propensity for injuries was a factor in that deal.

He had never pitched a full season, and there were apparently some who questioned his toughness. I think the biggest factor was the belief was that he wouldn't be on the team when they were back to being competitive, but trading him could help them be competitive. They sold really, really high.
Sherrill is a relatively cheap, I think, lefty reliever that can be a closer.
Jones needs to improve his plate discipline. He's very good defensively, and I think he can improve there. Also keep in mind that he was only 22 last year.
Tillman is the star of the deal, but that's been said by most since it was made. I think one person liked Butler more.
I didn't think there was much chance Markakis would extend.
I think Pie is more than that. I think he's a player that, for whatever reason, MacPhail really likes. One reason is that he gives the O's what could be the best defensive OF in at least the AL. MacPhail has been a big proponent of defense. That he's young, and has hit well in the minors helps, too. Like Jones, he needs to improve his plate discipline.
Spending in the draft, and on foreign scouting, is probably the best thing he's done, I agree. Wieters is listed by everyone, or almost everyone as the top or second (behind Price) prospect in baseball. Matusz should be up by early next season at the latest. Arrieta probably needs a little more time than that. The good recent drafting is why I'm a little reluctant to go after Sheets. He would cost the 2nd round pick.
