That's one of the reasons I always liked Ebert. He reviews films against similar films.

I saw American Pie for the first time because he gave it three stars, for instance. He doesn't rate AMPIE against The Iron Lady because they are significantly different films trying to do different things. I always liked that and wish more critics did the same thing.
