It wouldn't shock me if Obama's success had a significant effect on how black children view the traditional education system as a means to better their position. I think there has been a definite distrust of the system and a thought of why bother with school because everything was stacked against you anyway. I think a not insignificant number of black kids have felt that their only chance to make it was through athletics or entertainment. Sure there have been doctors and lawyers in the community who have worked their way up from nothing but Obama is such a celebrity and icon at this point that I can totally see the idea that applying yourself to education can lead you anywhere would have more resonance in the black community now.
