Santa Monica and Venice Beach are a lot closer. And let's face it: beach weather is a-comin'! Grauman's and the Walk of Fame are fine. Melrose Ave shops (between Fairfax and La Brea) is an area I've been a fan of more recently. Nice area for a walk.
There's also LA Live in downtown. Movies, restaurants, concerts, night clubs... it is also kind of a newer thing...
