"I don't get this. How freaking hard is it for an online company to track the tax on sales in a State and then remit it?"

I would assume their accounting software is hardwired to their online order system...

so I place an order for a book. As soon as I hit "confirm", they're books should be updated: CR sales and any taxes; DR Bank and DR Cost of sales; CR inventory. Each State/Province would have their own account tied into their online order system so if I live in NB, when I place an order in NB, I would get charged the NB rate of sales tax.
I'm surprised the Provinces haven't gone after them yet as they NEVER charge me a provincial portion for stuff I order, just the federal portion.
