it was the fact he was roughly 10% farther than anyone else using the same equipment ... it was that he would take the club back, point it to the ground and then smack the holy hell out of the ball until it landed 320 yds away.

Technology has improved significantly but here was a tubby guy hitting the ball farther than anyone dreamt possible.
