Yeah, they weren't prepared when it got a mention in EW.

Which greatly increased the traffic.
That combined with some great per screen averages (like the 2-screen release of Moulin Rouge) making expansion pretty easy was more than the servers could handle.
I think there were other things as well, but those were the biggest factors.
