none of his job changing in the past made him 'happy' or else he would have kept one of those jobs.

he can't be happy in work. Maybe because it's Work.
Anyhoo - the whole letter smacked of a very selfish individual. He's had years to figure out what he wants to no avail. The baby's needs come first now.
And yes, the thing about law school being the scratch to his itch is funny.
