Seattle has a huge land shortage based on geography. Houses between 200-800k are impossible to find. It's not unusual to see people buy broken down

or tiny houses (for outrageous sums of money) and either tear them down to the foundation and build a new house or just build around the old house. And of course there are some neighborhoods that are so bad you wouldn't live there if somebody gave you a house. When we lived there, our rent + parking ran $1600/month (not including utilities). The money per square foot is close to that of San Jose/San Francisco.
I blame emigrating Californians.
