D got one when she was 14, the summer we moved to Seattle. It made it a lot easier to keep up with her

Jr and Sr high kids got monthly 24/7 bus/ferry passes instead of riding school busses. I always feel better knowing I could easily find her when she and her buds would go downtown on the weekends and after school.
Also, I spent a lot less time waiting in cold parking lots at night waiting for busses to come back from concert choir contests, acting seminars, friday ski trips, etc. She'd just call when they were 15-20 minutes out and I'd hit the parking lot about the same time as the bus.
